WAMOON RLFC
It all began way back in the 1930's with the formation of the Wamoon Rugby League Football Club. The club was created by the sons of the original settlers of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and farm and cannery workers who arrived at Wamoon (8kms from Leeton) when the rice and fruit industries were at their fledgling stage.
Initially the club entered competition as a 'reserve grade' side. The Wamoon Club's first taste of success was on 3rd September, 1939 after the team won a Group 17 knockout final. Coincidently this was the same year as war was declared with Germany. It was not until 1937 thatthe club entered into first grade. The Wamoon club later amalgated with the Yanco club with Group 17 later becoming Group 20.
Some of the first players for Wamoon were : F.Garner, J.Tiffin, L.Crosier, W.Hollis, W.Emerson,R.Sadler, H.Johnson, W.Campbell, A.Stokes, R.Minchin, H.Grant, S.Southgate, V.Johnson and J.Lawrie.
The home gound was the 'Oval' at Wamoon and the 'Hut" served as the change rooms and Hall. The Wamoon boys won the Premiership in 1947. They last played in a Grand Final in 1954, going down to Griffith 20-9.
YANCO WAMOON RLFC
Traditons formed in those das and the 'spirit' of Wamoon still existed as an integral part of the Yanco Wamoon Club which formed in 1970. The first Executive for the new Club saw Ron Briggs- President, Bill Barnhill and Bill Blacker-VicePresidents, Keith Plant-Secretary and David Howie-Treasurer.
Yanco Wamoon Club's first taste of grand final success was i 1973 under the leadership of Bll Watson. Th Hawks defeated Lakes United 16-11 at Grifith. Yanco amoon next ran out onto the grand final field in 1975 under Capt/Coach John Gahan. However Griffith got revenge running out winners 22-7 at Narrandera.
Yanco Wamoon went onto win further premierships in 1979, again with Bill Watson. After winning the 'wooden spoon' in 1991, the Hawks dramatically turned things around going on to be Premiers in 1992-1993-1994 and 1995.
A successful club owes much to the peformance of their lower grade teams. Hawks U.16's won Premierships in 1987-1990 and 1994 and were Runners Up in 1985-1988-1989 and 1995. Hawks U.18's were Premiers in 1989-1990-1994-1995 and Runners-Up in 1991-1992. The Reserve Grade were Premiers in 1989 after finishing Runners Up in 1988. The Yanco Wamoon Clubcontinued to enjoy varying success across all grades over ensuing years.
NARRANDERA LIZARDS RLFC
The word 'Narrandera' is said to derive from a local Wiradjuri clan called the 'Narrungdera'. This word in turn is said to mean "jew-lizard', 'place of the goanna or lizard' or 'caught frill lizard'. It seemed natural then, that the lizard was adopted as the logo/mascot for the Narrandera R.L.F.C.
Premierships- 1986-1991-1999 to be completed
BIDGEE HURRICANES (YANCO WAMOON - NARRANDERA UNITED RLFC)
In 2011, a decision by Club members voted to explore the possibility of a merger with the Narrandera Lizards R.L.F.C , which was in recess at that time. After numerous meetings and planning procedures, the merger was completed a the end of 2011. The Bidgee Hurricanes Club was formed and offically titled 'Yanco Wamoon - Narrandera United R.L.F.C Inc.'
The amalgamation of the Hawks and Lizards came about for a few reasons. Management and members of both clubs saw the potential to increase the supporter base and a possible increase in sources of sponsorship.
However, there wa a further very important reason for the two clubs to join. As there had been no rugby league for children after 14-15yrs, it was felt that there as a great opportunity for our Club to provide a pathway for these boys and girls to continue in more senior ranks in rugby league and league tag respectively.
